Flared Rib Bracing
It is very common for pectus excavatum patients to have the lower portion of their rib cage protruding outward. This is actually called the costal arches and more commonly called ‘flared ribs’. Our acclaimed T-Joe Pectus Bracing System with our custom design will re-shape the costal arches or flared ribs into a nice flat anatomically correct shape. We have found that it is best to wear the brace prior to PE surgery. But the brace can be used after surgery with the bar in place or after bar removal. Your doctor will determine when it is best for you.

Pectus Carinatum Bracing
Our flagship T-Joe Bracing System is proven to improve / correct PC defects of all types; mild protrusions to the most severe and asymmetric deformities. The T-Joe is FDA registered, and has the flattest profile of any brace available making it barely visible under clothing and comfortable to wear. The anatomical shape of the brace allows for full arm motion and can even be worn during gentle physical activities like gym class or just plain kid fun!

Exercise and Personal Training Programs
Designed based on a very thorough Pectus Evaluation. The results are then reviewed and the exercise program created to ‘counter’ the effects of pectus such as weak muscles, flexibility, and poor posture which may be a result of the pectus.

Pre-surgery Preparation
Programs include our above mentioned Pectus Exercise Program, but is timed from about 4 weeks prior to the surgery date. The program includes all of our exercise techniques but includes nutrition, hydration, food intake, and the emotional preparation and support needed to have the body at it’s peak prior to the surgery. In our experience all the kids who have done a pre-surgery program do very well overall. They have less pain, shorter hospital stays, less complications such as muscle spasm and may even have better cosmetic outcomes.

Non-surgical improvement programs
Some defects are not severe enough for surgical correction, and others may choose not to have surgery at all. A non-surgical improvement program may help to reduce the severity of a PE defect and improve the overall look and appearance of the chest through exercise and use of the T-Joe Pectus Bracing System for Flared Ribs / PE model.

Your visit to NJ
Coming to see us here in New Jersey USA is now easier than ever.! Over the years many have come to see us from all over the USA and abroad as well!

Conveniently located just minutes from New York City, there are several local airports and major airlines that offer competitive airfare for your trip to New Jersey. Among the airports the closest is Newark Liberty International about 15 minutes away; JFK Airport and LaGuardia Airports are also within about 1 - 2 hours by car. Some others have also flown into airports on Long Island as well.

If you are coming to see us for a Pectus Evaluation followed by a workout session or two you should plan on at least 2 full days to get the best benefit of the workout sessions and to learn the exercise program. You will work out twice per day, one session in the morning one in the evening!

If you are coming for bracing it is suggested you stay at least 3 full days. The first day will be for your Pectus Evaluation, Brace Measurement, and your first workout session. The second day will begin with a workout session in the morning, your brace applied and checked for fit, and then the second workout session again later that evening. The third day will begin with a check of the brace fit and any adjustments made, then a workout session followed by one more that evening.

We prefer our bracing patients to sleep at least one night, two if possible in their new T-Joe Brace to be sure of comfortable fit before they leave.

Follow-up sessions do not require a trip back to New Jersey. Updates are sent using photos, measurements, and phone updates. Correspondence is sent by email and express mail if needed for brace repair. All this is in conjunction with your physician as well.

In between sessions there are so many things to do. Many families go sightseeing in New York City; you can go to the famous New Jersey beaches and boardwalk; or climb to the top of the Empire State Building!

When you come to see us for your pectus care it is not just about getting a brace or an exercise plan here are a few highlights of what to expect:

  • A thorough and detail oriented 3-page evaluation which includes measurements, photo analysis, flexibility testing, degree and angle of sternal tilt and rotation by maybe the most experienced pectus oriented Trainer

Physical Therapy

e have partnered with four outstanding physical therapy offices in the North Jersey area: The New Jersey Center of Physical Therapy, Churchill Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Montville Physical Therapy, and Wayne Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Each team is made up of licensed and board-certified professionals who have been personally trained in Pectus care by T-Joe himself! They work with most insurances, are PAIN-FREE facilities, and each team member shares Joe’s passion for helping kids with Pectus attain outstanding results while gaining confidence and strength.

These four practices have been named Sites of Clinical Excellence by Columbia University, and have received the 2010 Alumni Award from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). They are the first T-Joe Authorized Pectus Physical Therapy practices in New Jersey!

Attending physical therapy will fully complete your T-Joe Pectus Improvement Program, including pre-surgery therapy before a Nuss procedure, or before bracing for Pectus Carinatum patients.

Here are some ways our physical therapy team can help your child:
  • Strengthen muscles that have been weakened by a Pectus defect
  • Improve flexibility and posture
  • Decrease discomfort
  • Ensure lasting effects from the T-Joe Brace for most children
  • For Pectus Excavatum patients, physical therapy both before and after surgery can actually help your child have a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications such as muscle spasms, improve comfort, and may even result in a better cosmetic outcome.
